Apple Bans AI ‘Nudify’ Apps That Create Non‑Consensual Images
Apple updates App Store rules to ban AI “nudify” apps that generate non‑consensual intimate images, after criticism over deepfake abuse.
Tech
Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to explicitly prohibit “nudify” applications that use artificial intelligence to generate intimate images of individuals without their consent. The new rule targets AI tools that can produce realistic sexualized depictions, including of minors, and adds them to the list of disallowed content.
The change follows a wave of criticism after users on the social platform X employed the AI chatbot Grok earlier this year to create non‑consensual, sexualized deepfakes. While Apple faced pressure to act, it did not remove X or the Grok service from the App Store, prompting calls for stricter enforcement.
Developers whose apps fall under the new definition will need to remove or redesign features that could be used for non‑consensual image generation, or risk having their apps rejected during review.
Why It Matters
The policy aims to protect privacy and prevent the spread of non‑consensual deepfakes, a concern for users and regulators in the US and Europe.
