Eight state attorneys general – Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana – have filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that the company’s ChatGPT poses risks to children and that the firm misled users about the tool’s safety. The suits claim OpenAI prioritized profit over protecting young users, violating consumer‑protection laws.

The lawsuits, first reported by Reuters, accuse OpenAI of failing to implement adequate safeguards, such as age‑verification mechanisms and content filters, that would prevent minors from accessing potentially harmful material. Plaintiffs also contend that marketing materials overstated the platform’s safety features, thereby misleading parents and guardians.

OpenAI has not yet responded publicly to the filings. The legal actions come amid growing scrutiny of generative‑AI applications and could prompt broader regulatory measures aimed at ensuring AI products are safe for younger audiences.

Why It Matters

The suits highlight rising concerns about AI’s impact on minors and could influence future consumer‑protection policies in the US and Europe.
