Google Home Speakers Bug Triggers Hundreds of GB Data Downloads
Google Home speakers are downloading hundreds of GB due to a firmware update bug, causing unexpected data usage.

Owners of Google Home smart speakers are reporting an unexpected surge in background data traffic. The issue, first highlighted by 9to5Google and echoed by multiple Reddit users over the past week, involves the devices continuously pulling down hundreds of gigabytes of data.
According to the reports, the abnormal downloads appear to stem from a failure to correctly retrieve and install a recent firmware update. When the update process stalls, the speaker repeatedly attempts to download the missing files, leading to massive data consumption.
Google has not yet issued an official statement, but the pattern suggests a software‑level fault rather than a security breach. Users have noted that the problem persists across different models and network setups, indicating a widespread firmware handling error.
