Seven‑time world champion Lewis Hamilton said he hopes to keep racing in Formula One long enough to compete in the African Grand Prix, which is slated for the early 2030s. The British driver described the prospect of racing in Africa as a personal dream and said he believes the event belongs on the F1 calendar despite criticism of Rwanda’s human‑rights record.

Formula One confirmed a ten‑year deal to host the race in Rwanda, with a purpose‑built circuit planned for Bugesera, about 25 miles south of Kigali. The track has yet to be built, and the African Grand Prix will mark the sport’s return to the continent since South Africa’s Kyalami Grand Prix in 1993.

Hamilton’s comments come as the sport expands into new markets, while also drawing attention to the political context of hosting events in countries facing international scrutiny.

Why It Matters

The new African Grand Prix expands Formula One’s global footprint and raises questions about the sport’s role in countries with contested human‑rights records, a topic of interest for Western audiences.
