Tesla Plans to Sell Gold‑Hued Cybercab by Year‑End Amid Safety Probe
Tesla will begin selling its gold‑hued, steering‑wheel‑free Cybercab by year‑end, even as regulators examine its safety compliance.
Tech
Tesla announced on Wednesday that it intends to begin selling its Cybercab, a gold‑colored autonomous two‑seater, to customers before the close of 2026. The vehicle is notable for lacking a steering wheel and other conventional driver controls, relying entirely on self‑driving technology.
The rollout was disclosed during Tesla’s third‑quarter earnings call, where Lars Moravy, the company’s vice president of engineering, said the Cybercab would be available to the public by the end of the year. He emphasized that the model is designed for short‑range urban trips and will be offered without a traditional cockpit.
Federal regulators have opened an investigation to determine whether the Cybercab complies with existing vehicle safety standards. The probe focuses on the absence of manual controls and how the autonomous system meets federal safety requirements.
Why It Matters
The launch could accelerate adoption of driverless cars in the U.S. and Europe, while regulatory scrutiny highlights ongoing safety debates around autonomous vehicles.
